SPECIAL SELECTED
TOPICS- RESPIRATORY SYSTEM DISORDERS-SSTRSDO-QAA 001
What are the most diseases of the
respiratory important system?
The respiratory system is affected by a wide range of
congenital, inflammatory, infectious, obstructive, restrictive, vascular, and
neoplastic disorders. Atelectasis, pulmonary edema, and acute respiratory
distress syndrome are important acute conditions.
Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, including emphysema
and chronic bronchitis, is a major cause of morbidity and mortality. Bronchial
asthma is a common inflammatory airway disease. Pneumonia and tuberculosis are
major pulmonary infections. Interstitial lung diseases produce progressive
pulmonary fibrosis.
Occupational lung diseases include silicosis, asbestosis, and
coal workers' pneumoconiosis. Bronchogenic carcinoma is the commonest primary
malignant tumor of the lung. Pleural diseases include pleuritis, pleural
effusion, pneumothorax, and mesothelioma.
Together these disorders account for a significant proportion
of global respiratory illness.
